Louis, you mentioned the recession now, and yes the US and a lot of other countries too, I believe the UK is in a recession and Japan even more and other countries too. In a recession... what's happening is many people are losing their jobs. Well, a lot of people complain that it is a terrible thing, but maybe it's a good thing.
If you think about it - 200 years ago most people were entrepreneurs, most people had their own business. They were a farmer, maybe they were a blacksmith, maybe they owned a store, you know, a general store or something, maybe they were a police officer, maybe they were a preacher, maybe they were a stagecoach driver... and a lot of farmers, of course.
But what I am saying is we all went from being entrepreneurs, fending for ourselves, and then we hit the industrial revolution and we all went into the 'go to school, get a job, so that you can go work for a company' mentality and now it's kind of falling apart, because basically now all the companies are saying, 'we are not going to close this company down, or go bankrupt, but guess what... you are going to lose your job'.
And it is happening all over the place. Massive, massive layoffs everywhere, even a few big companies are going bankrupt, because however many people they laid off they just couldn't survive. A huge, huge electronic chain in the US just went bankrupt last month called Circuit City. Things like that are just going crazy. The big three automakers have asked the US Government for financial aid in the tune of billions and billions of dollars.
So no company is safe anymore. What is safe is taking control of your life, your financial situation yourself. Yeah, it has its risks, but what is riskier I guess -- working for a company for 30 years and then getting laid off when you are 59 years old right before retirement, or trying to do it yourself?
So yes it is bad, but on the other hand it might be good for some people, it might be a wake-up call for some people to figure this out that they don't have job security anymore; that they are not going to have a pension in 30 years. They are not going to have Social Security - in fact I strongly believe that the United States social security system will be bankrupt by the year that I am about ready to retire. So I have no faith in it at all. But I do have faith in myself to put enough money aside for my own retirement.
So anyways, what I am saying is, if you have lost your job or if you are maybe going to lose your job, don't give up. You know, get your head on straight and try and do something yourself. Online Publishing is a fantastic way to go, you know if you have lost your job, I am sorry to say, you have a lot of time now on your hands. Don't sit around wasting it. Do something to start a business. Go into Online Publishing.
Everyone has a skill. A lot of people say 'I don't have a skill. I am not special. I don't know anything.' Well, hey do you know how to fish? Do you know how to fix a car? Make a chair? Do woodworking? Do you know how to lay tiles? Are you a bricklayer? Are you a carpenter? Are you a doctor? It doesn't matter.
A lot of people know how to do something even if it is making sidewalks, you know how to do something. Why not make some 'how to' products? Make a 'how to cook' or how to video of 'how to tile you bathroom'? There are so many things you can do.
I know a guy. His name is Gerry; I forget his last name - it is hard to pronounce - but all he does, is wine tasting and he has his blog where he films himself tasting wine for 30 minutes a day or something. And it is just huge, there are so many people watching it now. He makes tons of revenue now from AdSense, marketing his own products now and doing seminars and things like that. You know, the sky is the limit. Just be different when you are doing it. Don't try and copy somebody. Don't try and do something exactly like somebody else. Be different.
The reason why Gerry was successful was because he was different. He wasn't a stuffy old man tasting wine and saying 'oh this is a very delicious wine!' He was just wearing a T-shirt - you know he talks frankly to people. He talks just like a college student and that attracted a lot of young people and now he is very successful, so there is a lot of... the only limit is your imagination I guess and your drive and your self-determination is your only limit to what you can and cannot do.
So if you have lost your job - or if things aren't going good or maybe you want to quit your job you know - really seriously look into starting an Information Publishing business.
LA - And of your own site, as you mentioned before, it is quite a simple system. Basically the goal is to build the list and then make one time offers and then repeat offers to that list.
JG - Right, yeah, you can do that. The main thing is building a list. But yes, monetizing that list straight away is a good thing. Some people don't like it but it works.
If you can give away that free report that I just talked about and then say, "Let's expand on that...". Let's say you have a free report written and you also have your full product already written for you as the back end. So let's say you give away that 40-page report but now you have a 200-page report already sitting at the back end.
So everybody who opts in for that free report, they see a message that says "Thank you for showing interest in the report - but wait - we have a very special offer for you right now - one time only - make a decision now or forever lose out..."
And you have all the benefits of that... maybe, it's an entire course, you know whatever you want to have there. You have some special offer where you are selling it at a no-brainer price and you'll get a high conversion rate.
So now you are monetizing into paid customers those people who are opting in to that free report. And those paid customers, you can run your mailing list for example on Aweber so they automatically remove a person from your free subscriber list if they join your paid customer list; so that they are not getting two emails from you.
I have seen people who do two or three one time offers. If you say no to the first one then they sell you a second offer that says something else. Maybe they take a few things away and lower the price, or if they say Yes and buy it, then maybe there is another offer on top of that. So you get the free 30-page report, you buy the 200-page book and then you get another offer after that to get a 10-book course delivered or something. There are so many ways you can do this but yeah, it's a perfect way to do it.
Start you own affiliate program. That's a great way to get affiliates working for you... get affiliates making you money. That's how we built our entire empires. We basically had thousands and thousands of affiliates promoting our products everyday. And every time they make a sale, so do we of course. So it saves us a lot of money on advertising. I hardly spend anything on advertising every year because of our affiliates. We use a lot of integrated marketing. So there's many things you can do with affiliates for free traffic that will keep making you sales. As long as you have a system in place that works and converts.
Now you want to make sure you test it and monitor it since just because you have a one-time offer doesn't mean you are going to have high conversions. If it's a poor offer, or maybe it's a great product but the sales page is poorly written, so you want to test that. Or maybe you have a great sales page but your products suck and you have a high refund rate and people don't like being burned. If you burnt them once they are basically going to stop being your customer for life so you want to make sure you really over-deliver. Yeah, so there are so many things you can do.
